The research, development and training wing of SMEC Automation aims at developing and providing services and tools to address the aspects of early process design, process engineering and implementation from a purely engineering perspective. The economical aspects of control systems have high focus, as does the’ provisioning of the customer with improved knowledge and decision support tools. With its combination of control architecture, logistics and optimization, as well as a strong logic development capacity and training, SMEClabs forms a natural extension to SMEC’s diverse activities on the control engineering arena. To be able to provide clients with state-of-the-art services and tools, the unit collaborates close with all the regional bases of SMEC drawing from the extensive competency in house units. We are able to provide assistance in developing a project from an early stage, based upon customer needs, through to a conceptual design including an outline specification. We use our unique concept
development process developed by SMEClabs, together with expertise from other units of SMEC, to facilitate the process design development through pre-defined stages involving analyses on both economical and technical level.
SMEClabs also runs a training division specializing in the effective training of your in-plant personnel. Courses are designed to cover all aspects of our installation to provide for smooth & hassle- free operation, thus improving your profits and cutting down long-term costs even further. We can also provide a customized training program for your personal, detailing any major automation/electrical related system already installed at your facility. Training is hands-on and covers all required fundamental and specialist know-how in system operation, troubleshooting & maintenance. SMEClabs also provides trained technicians and engineers to various industrial concerns. Engineers and technicians trained by us avail 24-hour phone support from our facility in case of any major problems requiring immediate attention. Our teams of experts are always available for any technical support and documentation required. Over the years SMEClabs has trained over 3000 engineering graduates which have been placed in industrial companies in over 15 countries. SMEClabs also run a product division specialized in developing non-sophisticated, user-friendly, equipment for labs, wherein a student can do testing and research. Our trainer kits focus on higher strata of the technological order and assisted by the complete documentation and additional support lessons, the students are on their way to mastering the technology in a few days time. SMEClabs provides trainer kits on a variety of different technologies and hardware such as Power electronics, Programmable Logic Controllers, Process control, Instrumentation, Variable Frequency Drives, Human Machine Interfaces, SCADA systems and PID Controllers. SMEClabs provides custom trainer kits for use in colleges, universities, centers of technical education and training wings of companies. We know that our customers have diverse requirements and methods when it comes to training. Our trainer kits are custom built for each customer’s requirement after many rounds of discussions between our engineers and the engineers/trainers at the customer end. The trainer kits focus on providing on-hand training in the different hardware technologies that the student will be using through his career in the automation industry.

SMEC offers a rich pool of courses and training preparing the candidates to begin their professional career. The training can be conducted at the college premises or any other location through domain experts having a close monitoring of the industrial development. Customization of courseware and flexibility in schedule are add-on features for the smooth transition of campus training; without creating any hassle in the pre-determined academic calendar. Participants of our 1 month and 2/3 weeks industrial training workshops gain exposure to working challenges and their effective solutions build an association between theoretical concepts and actual implementation in live scenarios. Practical exposure facilitates the acquiring of on-job skills by gaining proficiency in problem-solving and becoming industry-ready.
In House Training
SMEC started its Research, Development and Training division to train engineers under the brand name SMEClabs. It aims to prepare the fresh engineers with Industry Connect to fine-tune their academic curriculum gained knowledge to the employable skill set to adapt to easy integration into the industrial realities in early process design, process engineering and implementation on their employment.
The training will be conducted by the engineers of the Core Resource Group of SMEC Automation, working as part of SMEClabs, the research, development and training wing of the company. The Core Resource Group is a team of qualified and experienced engineering professionals from different streams of engineering, working in a cognitive framework, involving extensive research into the technologies involved in the control engineering arena.
The team plays a key role in the development of cutting-edge technologies and products that the company applies in its marine and industrial projects, and is the driving force that keeps SMEC Automation ahead in terms of quality, reliability, and efficiency and helps it maintain the status as the leader in the marine automation sector in Asia.
SKILLS DEVELOPMENT & PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT
We are able to provide assistance in developing a project from an early stage, based upon customer needs, through to a conceptual design including an outline specification. We use our unique concept development process developed by SMEClabs, together with expertise from other units of SMEC, to facilitate the development through pre-defined stages involving analyses on both economic and technical level. Over the years team SMEC has successfully completed works related to project development in all domains. Industrial projects completed include various national level projects for companies like Aditya Birla, Reliance, TATA amongst others. Govt. enterprises that have benefited from the SMEC scientific offering include ISRO, VSSC, NPOL, ONGC and BARC amongst others.
SMEC STEM(SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH)
The objective of this is to cater curiosity, creativity, and imagination in young minds and cultivate skills such as design mindset, computational thinking, adaptive learning, physical computing etc. Young children will get a chance to work with tools and equipment to understand what, how and why aspects of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
SMEC STEM centres would contain educational and learn “do it yourself” kits and equipment on – science, electronics, robotics, open source microcontroller boards, sensors and 3D printers etc. Realizing the need to create scientific temper and cultivate the spirit of curiosity and innovation among young minds, SMEClabs proposes to support the establishment of a network of SMEC STEM centres across India. This is a workspace where young minds can give shape to their ideas through hands-on do-it-yourself mode and learn innovation skills. The vision is to cultivate 1 Million children in India as Neoteric Innovators.
